Smart Strategies During the Exam

Before preparing for any exam, an aspirant should be aware of the exam patterns and previous year questions of that exam. After determining the pattern, one should build s strategy to score the minimum marks required to qualify for the exam, yet aim for scoring the maximum marks.

RRB PO prelims reasoning section consists of 40 questions, each question carrying 1 mark. The time allotted is 25 minutes, giving you roughly 37 seconds per question, which means for puzzle and arrangement, which usually have a set of 4-5 questions, you should not invest more than 2-3 minutes. And, for a single question, you should strictly follow the 30 seconds per question rule.

To qualify Preliminary examination, you must score at least 30 marks in this section, if you score around the same marks in the quant section.

1. Follow a 3-Round Attempt Strategy:

  • Round 1: Attempt easy questions first – Inequality, Syllogism, Blood Relations
  • Round 2: Moderate puzzles or seating if comfortable
  • Round 3: Tough puzzles – only if time permits

2. Skip Trap Questions

  • If a puzzle seems too time-consuming or confusing, skip and return later
  • Avoid investing more than 3 minutes on any one question

3. Better Accuracy > High Attempts

General Strategies for Solving Puzzles

Read carefully: Give the entire puzzle a cursory read to understand its structure and variables. Underline direct clues (for example, “P lives on the first floor”).

Organise data: Use tables, diagrams, or grids to look for relationships. For example, a floor-based puzzle requires a floor-number table; a circular arrangement requires a labeled circle.

Prioritise direct clues: Start with clues that definitely determine the situation or characteristics, then build on relative clues.

Avoid assumptions: Draw conclusions based only on the information given. For example, don’t assume that two people are adjacent unless told to.

Time management: Allocate 2-3 minutes for prelims and 5-7 minutes for mains. If stuck, move on and revisit later.

Practice mock tests: Simulate exam conditions with timed mock tests to improve speed and accuracy.

Analyse mistakes: Review wrong attempts and identify where you misread clues or made logical mistakes.

Directions: Answer the questions based on the information given below.

There are 8 boxes which have different colors among Black, Grey, Red, Orange, Pink, Yellow, Green and Blue but not necessarily in the same order. These boxes have different weight and none of them has the same weight. The bottommost box is considered as 1st box and the box above is considered as 2nd box.

Yellow box has the maximum weight and is an odd numbered box. The 3rd lightest box is an even numbered box below the yellow box and at least 2 boxes are between them. Black box is immediately above the box, which is the 3rd lightest and is heavier than the black box. The box at the top has the lowest weight. There are 3 boxes between the lightest box and blue box, which is not the 3rd lightest. Orange box is immediately above the red box, which is the 3rd heaviest. Red box is neither the bottommost box nor the 7th box. More than 3 boxes have less weight than the Grey box. Green box is not the topmost box. At least 2 boxes are between Pink box and Yellow box. Orange box is neither 2nd heaviest nor 5th heaviest.

Common Solution:

As Yellow box has the heaviest and is an odd numbered box and the 3rd lightest box is an even numbered box below the yellow box and at least 2 boxes are between them, so yellow box and the 3rd lightest box is either (7,4) or (5,2) or (7,2). As Black box is immediately above the box, which has the 3rd lightest and has less weight than it, also the box at the top has the lowest weight, so black box is either box 5 or box 3 and has the 2nd lightest while the lightest box is box 8.As there are 3 boxes between the lightest box and blue box, which doesn’t have the 3rd lightest, so blue box is box 4.

Again as Orange box is immediately above the red box, which has the 3rd heaviest and red box is neither the bottommost box nor the 7th box, so orange box and red box are either box (7,6) or (6,5). As more the 3 boxes have less weight than the Grey box, so Grey box must be the bottommost box and has either 2nd heaviest or 4th heaviest. As Green box is not the topmost box, so Green box is box 2 and it has 3rd lightest. Thus, Pink box is at the top and has the lightest. As at least 2 boxes are between Pink box and Yellow box, yellow box must be box 5. As Orange box doesn’t have either 2nd highest or 5th heaviest, so it must have 4th heaviest and thus, Grey box has 2nd heaviest and blue box has 5th heaviest. The final ranking of these boxes as per their decreasing weight is given below:

Yellow > Grey > Red > Orange > Blue > Green > Black > Pink

(Heaviest) (Lightest)

The final table is given below:

B) 2

Solution:

As Yellow box has the heaviest and is an odd numbered box and the 3rd lightest box is an even numbered Number of boxes above the box, which is 4th heaviest is 2 lesser than the number of boxes above the box, which is the heaviest.
