What is Coding and Decoding?

Coding-decoding questions involve a specific pattern where words, numbers, or sentences are written in a coded form using a hidden rule. You are required to identify the logic behind the code and apply it to decode or encode other elements accordingly.

Common Types of Coding-Decoding

Understanding the types of questions helps in tackling them efficiently. Here are the major types:

  1. Letter Coding:
A word is coded using alphabetical shifts or transformations.
    Example: DOGFQI
  2. Number Coding:
Numbers are assigned to words based on letter positions, addition, multiplication, etc.
    Example: CAT24 (C=3 + A=1 + T=20)
  3. Substitution Coding:
Words are replaced with other words.
Example: ‘Apple’ is called ‘Orange,’ and ‘Orange’ is called ‘Banana’. What is eaten as a fruit?
  4. Chinese (Sentence) Coding:
Sentences are coded with random codes. You have to find the meaning using commonality.
    Example:
    • “I love coding” → “ka la ma”
    • “Coding is fun” → “ma da pa”
    • Hence, “coding” = “ma”
  5. Mixed Letter-Number Coding:
A mix of letters, numbers, or symbols used for codes. Requires deep analysis.

Coding-Decoding Solve Tips & Shortcuts

Now that we have got an idea about coding-decoding questions after observing the above examples, let’s have a look at some tips & shortcuts of coding-decoding which will be pretty useful in answering these questions.

  1. Don’t be afraid of these questions. Take a shot at these and see if you are able to solve them. If you have done enough practice beforehand, you can easily solve them and gain brownie points over others.
  2. Read the question carefully and try writing down the codes of the elements once you have cracked it.
  3. If you sense some new pattern of coding-decoding questions, don’t get scared. Remember! The new pattern is for all the aspirants. Take a moment to see what information is provided and what the question is trying to ask.
  4. Sometimes, these questions may be combined with some other concepts for eg. blood relation or direction sense. You need to keep in mind that no matter how many concepts are involved, the basic concept remains the same. Evaluate how much time the questions might take and then take a call to answer the questions.
  5. Remember! It’s only practice that can help you evaluate how much time a question is going to take. The more questions you solve, the more expertise you gain.
  6. Try memorizing the alphabet’s positions forward & backwards. A good way to do this is to remember the words EJOTY & VQLGB (Check the usage below).
