Time, speed and distance:

Basics:

Time taken to travel a certain distance = Distance travelled ÷ average speed of travel

Speed of travel = Distance travelled ÷ Time taken for the distance travelled

Distance travelled = Speed at which the distance was travelled × Time taken for the travel

Trains:

Trains are objects with significant length. So while calculating measures such as speed, distance travelled or time taken by a train, we also take into consideration the length of the train.

For example, the time taken by the train to cross a pole is equal to the time taken by the just one point of the train to cross a distance that is equal to the length of the train.

Average speed:

Suppose to travel a distance of ‘2d’ km, if a person travelled ‘d’ km at a speed of ‘p’ km/h and remaining distance at a speed of ‘q’ km/h, then average speed of the journey

= total distance travelled ÷ total time taken

Time taken to travel first ‘d’ km = (d/p) hours

Time taken to travel next ‘d’ km = (d/q) hours

Boat and stream:

Problems based on boat and stream is solved mostly using the same concepts as standard time, speed and distance problems.

Basics:

The speed of a boat changes with respect to the direction of travel of the boat with respect to the stream.

Let the speed of a boat in still water be ‘x’ km/h

Let the speed of the stream in which the boat is sailing be ‘y’ km/h

Then, speed of the boat while sailing against the stream i.e. in upstream = (x – y) km/h

Speed of the boat while sailing with the stream i.e. in downstream = (x + y) km/h

Question 1: Train A and train B run between station P and station Q. Train A starts at 9:00 AM from station P and after 40 minutes, train B starts from station Q. Train B meets train A after 3 hours of starting and the speed of train A is 84 km/h. If the distance between the station P and station Q is 542 km then find the speed of the train B.

Solution 1: B)

Let, the speed of train B be x km/h

So, 84 × (40/60) + 84 × 3 + x × 3 = 542

56 + 252 + 3x = 542

3x = 234, x = 78

Therefore, the speed of train B = 78 km/h

Hence, option b.

Solution 2: A)

Total distance covered by him = 2 × 3 × (48/2) × 5 = 720 metres

Speed of boy = 27 km/hr = 7.5 m/s

Required time taken = 720/7.5 = 96 seconds

Hence, option a.

Solution 3: A)

Let, speed of A, B, and C be A m/s, B m/s, and C m/s respectively.

According to question,

1200/A = (1200 – 5B)/B – 5 … (i)

Also, 1200/A = (1200 – 10C)/C – 10 … (ii)

Comparing equation (i) and (ii), we get,

(1200 – 5B)/B – 5 = (1200 – 10C)/C – 10

1200/B – 5 – 5 = 1200/C – 10 – 10

1200/B = 1200/C – 10

1200/B = (1200 – 5C)/C – 5

Solution 4: D)

Speed of truck = 650/26 = 25 km/hour

So, speed of car = 25 × 1.2 = 30 km/hour

So, speed of train = 30 × 1.4 = 42 km/hour

Therefore, required time = 840/42 = 20 hours

Hence, option d.             

Solution 5: C)

Speed of Amit from point of A to B = 20 × 18/5 = 72 km/h

So the average speed of the whole journey = 2 × 72 × 28/(72 + 28) = 4032/100 = 40.32 km/h

Hence, option c.

Solution 6: E)

Let the average speed of cycle be x km/h.

So, the average speed of bus = 5x km/h

Distance traveled by bus = 1100 – 100 = 1,000 km

So, according to the question: 100/x + 1000/5x = 12

100/x + 200/x = 12

300/x = 12, x = 25 km/h

So, the average speed of the bus = 5 × 25 = 125 km/h

Solution 7: D)

Total distance = 345 km

Distance travelled by 1^st car in 3 hours = 75×3 = 225 km

Remaining distance = 345 – 225 = 120 km

Both cars will meet after (120/120) hours = 1 hour

Therefore, time of meet = 3:00 PM

Solution 8: E)

Let the length of the train be‘x’ meters.

According to question: x/8 = (x + 260)/21

21x = 8x + 2080

13x = 2080, x = 160

Speed of the train = 160/8 = 20 m/s = 20 × 18/5 = 72 km/h

So, distance travelled by the train in 3 hours = 72 × 3 = 216 km

Solution 9: C)

Total distance travelled by Aniket = (10/2) × {2 × 40 + (10 – 1) × 6} = 5 × (80 + 54) = 670 km

Let the length of the train be ‘x’ meters.

So according to question: x/10 = (x + 405)/28

28x = 10x + 4050

18x = 4050, x = 225

So, the length of the train = 225 meters

Speed of the train = 225/10 = 22.5 m/s

Speed of the boy = 9 × 5/18 = 2.5 m/s

Relative speed of the train = 22.5 + 2.5 = 25 m/s

So, the time taken by the train to cross the boy = 225/25 = 9 seconds
