Basics:
Time taken to travel a certain distance = Distance travelled ÷ average speed of travel
Speed of travel = Distance travelled ÷ Time taken for the distance travelled
Distance travelled = Speed at which the distance was travelled × Time taken for the travel
Trains:
Trains are objects with significant length. So while calculating measures such as speed, distance travelled or time taken by a train, we also take into consideration the length of the train.
For example, the time taken by the train to cross a pole is equal to the time taken by the just one point of the train to cross a distance that is equal to the length of the train.
Average speed:
Suppose to travel a distance of ‘2d’ km, if a person travelled ‘d’ km at a speed of ‘p’ km/h and remaining distance at a speed of ‘q’ km/h, then average speed of the journey
= total distance travelled ÷ total time taken
Time taken to travel first ‘d’ km = (d/p) hours
Time taken to travel next ‘d’ km = (d/q) hours

Problems based on boat and stream is solved mostly using the same concepts as standard time, speed and distance problems.
Basics:
The speed of a boat changes with respect to the direction of travel of the boat with respect to the stream.
Let the speed of a boat in still water be ‘x’ km/h
Let the speed of the stream in which the boat is sailing be ‘y’ km/h
Then, speed of the boat while sailing against the stream i.e. in upstream = (x – y) km/h

Let, the speed of train B be x km/h
So, 84 × (40/60) + 84 × 3 + x × 3 = 542
56 + 252 + 3x = 542

Total distance covered by him = 2 × 3 × (48/2) × 5 = 720 metres
Speed of boy = 27 km/hr = 7.5 m/s
Required time taken = 720/7.5 = 96 seconds

Solution 3: A)
Let, speed of A, B, and C be A m/s, B m/s, and C m/s respectively.
According to question,
1200/A = (1200 – 5B)/B – 5 … (i)
Also, 1200/A = (1200 – 10C)/C – 10 … (ii)
Comparing equation (i) and (ii), we get,
(1200 – 5B)/B – 5 = (1200 – 10C)/C – 10
1200/B – 5 – 5 = 1200/C – 10 – 10

So, speed of car = 25 × 1.2 = 30 km/hour

Speed of Amit from point of A to B = 20 × 18/5 = 72 km/h
So the average speed of the whole journey = 2 × 72 × 28/(72 + 28) = 4032/100 = 40.32 km/h

Let the average speed of cycle be x km/h.
So, the average speed of bus = 5x km/h
Distance traveled by bus = 1100 – 100 = 1,000 km
So, according to the question: 100/x + 1000/5x = 12
100/x + 200/x = 12
300/x = 12, x = 25 km/h
So, the average speed of the bus = 5 × 25 = 125 km/h

Let the length of the train be‘x’ meters.
According to question: x/8 = (x + 260)/21

So according to question: x/10 = (x + 405)/28
28x = 10x + 4050
