ANSWER KEYS and SOLUTIONS:
1) – 4) | 2) – 3) | 3) – 1) | 4) – 2) | 5) – 4) | 6) – 4) |
7) – 1) | 8) – 3) | 9) – 4) | 10) – 2) |
Solution 1: 4)
Let the required distance be ‘x’ metres.
ATQ;
(x/20) – (x/25) = 3600
Or, {(5x – 4x)/100} = 3600
Or, x = 360000 metres = 360 km.
Hence, option d.
Solution 2: 3)
Speed of boat in still water = (1.20 X 15) = 18 km/hr
Upstream speed of the boat = 18 – 15 = 3 km/hr
Downstream speed of the boat = 18 + 15 = 33 km/h
Required time = (10.5/3) + (16.5/33) = 3.5 + 0.5 = 4 hours
Hence, option c.
Solution 3: 1)
Let the length of the train be ‘L’ metres
Speed of the train = {72 X (5/18)} = 20 m/s
ATQ,
53 = {(448 + L)/20}
Or, 1060 = 448 + L
So, L = 612
Therefore, length of the train = 612 metres
Hence, option a.
Solution 4: 2)
Let speed of train ‘A’ and train ‘B’ be ‘3x’ m/s and ‘2x’ m/s, respectively.
ATQ,
3x = {(430 + 410)/40}
Or, x = 7
Now, speed of train ‘B’ = 2x = (2 X 7) = 14 m/s
So, length of train ‘B’ = (14 X 25) = 350 metres
Hence, option b.
Solution 5: 4)
Let the speed of the stream be ‘y’ km/h.
ATQ;
{60/(20 – y)} = 1 + {75/(20 + y)}
Or, 60 X (20 + y) = (20 – y) {(20 + y) + 75}
Or, 1200 + 60y = 400 – y2 + 1500 – 75y
Or, y2 + 135y – 700 = 0
Or, y2 + 140y – 5y – 700 = 0
Or, y(y + 20) – 5(y + 20) = 0
Or, (y + 20)(y – 5) = 0
So, y = 5 or y = -20
Since, speed cannot be negative. So, y = 5
So, speed of the stream = 5 km/h
Hence, option d.
Solution 6: 4)
Let, speed of boat in downstream and upstream be ‘8x’ km/h and ‘7x’ km/h, respectively.
Speed of boat in still water = (8x + 7x)/2 = 7.5x km/h
So, (360/8x) + (420/7x) = 21
Or, (45/x) + (60/x) = 21
Or, 21x = 105
Or, x = 5
Required time taken = (675/7.5x) = 18 hours
Hence, option d.
Solution 7: 1)
Let the speed of the boat in still water and the speed of the stream be 5x km/hr and 3x km/hr, respectively
According to the question,
{64/(5x + 3x)} + {64/(5x – 3x)} = 10
Or, (64/8x) + (64/2x) = 10
Or, (8/x) + (32/x) = 10
Or, (8 + 32) = 10x
Or, 10x = 40
Or, x = 4
Speed of the boat in still water = 5x = 5 X 4 = 20 km/h
Hence, option a.
Solution 8: 3)
Let the length of the train = ‘d’ metres
Then, speed of the train = (d/21) m/s
Speed of the truck = 18 ÷ 3.6 = 5 m/s
And so, relative speed of the train with respect to the truck = (d/21) – 5 = {(d – 105)/21} m/s
And so, (d + 75) ÷ {(d – 105)/21} = 30
Or, 21d + 1575 = 30d – 3150
Or, 9d = 4725
And so, d = 4725 ÷ 9 = 525
Or, length of the train = 525 metres
Hence, option c.
Solution 9: 4)
Speed of train = (200/8) = 25 m/s
The time taken by the train to cross the platform = {(200 + 325)/25} = 21 seconds
Hence, option d.
Solution 10: 2)
Length of the train = 300 – 100 = 200 metres
So, speed of the train = (200/15) = (40/3) m/s
So, time taken to cross the platform = {(300 + 200) X 3} ÷ 40 = 37.5 seconds
Hence, option b.
