Success Story of Rasheed Khan| Cleared RBI Grade B

Hi, This is Rasheed Khan working as a Grade B at Reserve Bank of India. I would like to share my story of preparation for RBI Grade B exam. Initially, I had a general idea of the competitive examinations and was preparing vaguely without much focus when the RBI Grade B notification came. Although the vacancies were very limited in number, somehow I felt that I stand a chance in this examination. The Phase I exam was around 2 months away. And I thought if I have to have a respectable career, I need to work hard and that time is now. A smartphone is anybody’s constant companion these days but I thought to stay away from social media and to use the phone only for current affairs updates and as a dictionary for new words.

Preparation in the 1st month

I put all the attempts of limiting these two months to myself and staying in touch with only those friends who were sincere about RBI Grade B’s preparation. Being an avid reader, the preparation of English section only required a brush-up and practice. My quants section needed efforts from my side and my biggest concern was reasoning. I’m a morning person and I used to wake up at around 5 am to start understanding and practising reasoning concepts which I would continue until 8. I had subscribed to two newspapers: The Indian Express and The Business Line. I start reading these newspapers at 9 am and continue until 11.30-12 noon.

Since both of these newspapers are bulky in themselves, it was not possible for me to read them word by word. Rather I would take a glance at the main page and ensured that I read and understand the editorial section with a dictionary and a notebook. Reading a newspaper with a dictionary obviously improved my word power and the notebook was used to make note of important facts and data. After lunch I used to start revising and practising the concepts of Quantitative Aptitude at 2 pm which I would continue until 5 pm. At 7 pm it was English section’s turn where I used to practice the questions until 10 pm.

This complete cycle was continued for the first month with the exception of one day when I had an emergency to attend. Since I was scoring good in the English section, I had skipped preparing for the English section a couple of times to compensate for Reasoning.

The preparation of General Awareness was very vast in nature. Since Phase II already had ESI & FM, so I had to prepare all the topics in great detail. I made personal notes as much as I can. Also, I took the help of Pm’s notes for revision. My advice to future aspirants is not to undermine the role of general awareness and spare as much time as possible for its preparation.

Preparation in the 2nd month

Having followed this rigorous schedule, I was pretty much thorough with the concepts and was ready to take mock tests. The reason why I chose practicemock’s course is because its name remained on the top on different discussion forums such as fb, pagalguy etc. I started taking mock tests on an alternate day basis. The analysis once again reminded me time and again that I was lagging behind in the reasoning section. I had to focus more on the reasoning section and started doing it right away. The result was apparent by the time I reached the last week and I started being on the top slots in mock tests.

In the actual exam

In the English section I attempted 19 questions. In the quantitative aptitude section I solved 22 questions. And, in the reasoning section, since I was a little apprehensive and didn’t want to take any chance, I was able to solve only 35 questions in the remaining time. When the results came, I was jubilant as I was able to clear Phase I and qualified for Phase II.

Preparation for Mains

I started my preparation for mains immediately after the Phase I exam and didn’t wait for its results. As already stated, the preparation of general awareness is extremely vast and my solid preparation came handy towards the preparation ESI. Pm notes also helped me to a great extent. I went through India Economy by Ramesh Singh. Also, I kept myself updated on social sector schemes, welfare programs, current affairs related to the economics of the last 6 months thoroughly.

Finance and Management is completely theoretical in nature and it’s only by a consistent revision that you can have a solid preparation. Please be informed that this straightforward questions in this section can get you a lot of marks.

Coming to the preparation of descriptive writing, my reading habits helped me to a great extent. I used to write a couple of paragraphs on any concurrent issue every week and this habit helped me very well.

How did PracticeMock Help You ?

PM’s notes helped me a lot in clearing the exam and also I have practiced lot of mocks.

Message for the Fellow Aspirants

I would only like to say that there isn’t any shortcut to success and luck favours those who are not dependent on it. Forget everything: relatives, friends, socializing. You can catch up with all these things once your exam gets over. Prepare a rigorous schedule for conceptual clarity and stick to it. Only conceptual clarity will not reap many benefits if you don’t solve mock tests. Mock tests help you in managing time and to select questions. Start taking mock tests 20-25 days prior to the examination so that you get in the exam mode and nail the actual exam. I wish you all the best in your preparation.
