Most Scoring Topics For English Language and Comprehension

One can score well in the exam if he/she has good knowledge of the basics of the topics that are most important in the exam. Below we have explained those topics that are the highest scoring in the exam. Candidates must read the basics first carefully and are advised to write them in the notebook if they find something important.

1. Reading Comprehension

The SSC presents a total of at least 15 questions in the SSC Stenographer exam. One can attempt this section easily if he/she has the habit of reading as a major area of the examination where there are passages and then questions based on those passages. The information above shows that candidates need to pay attention to the selection of a main idea, considerations of important supporting details, and understand the author’s attitude. To master the steps of reading and analyzing, candidates must practice reading literary, informative and opinion material. They must focus on words and phrases along with their meaning. Many times, doing a lot of practice will help build up speed and comprehension of questions, and therefore, it will be easier to attempt questions within the time limit.

2. Cloze Test

This topic is considered as the most important due to its high weightage in the exam. Candidates can expect at least 20 questions of this topic in the SSC Stenographer exam. The cloze test includes texts with a certain number of omitted words and entering which has to be deduced from the context. This topic tests your ability how you provide resources and grammar awareness in constructing sentences. To be accurate, improve your knowledge regarding the various contexts that may be used and one of the methods is to try and fill in the gaps with the correct words. Therefore, working through practice tests will definitely help you to improve this topic.

4. Active and Passive Voice

The difference between the active and the passive voice is an important thing to learn in English grammar. To write under this topic one has to understand the structures of sentences and format them as needed. The Active voice puts more focus on the subject acting whereas the passive voice puts more focus on the action being performed on the subject. To be proficient in this, one has to read and write more and especially exercise how to change the sentences from one voice to another as well as try to learn rules that concern tense and subject-verb agreement.

3. Synonyms and Antonyms

This topic evaluates your vocabulary knowledge through questions that require you to identify synonyms and antonyms of given words. Candidates must use flashcards to revise the words from time to time and involve themselves in activities like games and quizzes on vocabulary. It is correct to read as many kinds of genres as possible because they will introduce you to new words and contexts, which will help you remember.

5. Direct and Indirect Speech

Direct and Indirect speech questions involve reporting someone’s sayings. In direct speech, an author uses the exact words spoken by another person, whereas, in indirect speech, an author puts the speaker’s words in his own words. To practice, find out the changes in tense, pronouns, and time expressions used while converting between the two forms. Candidates can expect at least 10 questions in the SSC Stenographer exam at an easy to moderate level.

6. Error Spotting

The kind of questions that are mostly addressed in this case are error-spotting questions in that they ask the candidates to identify grammatical errors in their sentences. This section tests your competency in grammar and this is important to grammar rules such as subject-verb agreement and tense consistency and the right use of prepositions. This helps improve grammar skills by summarizing the major ideas in grammar and using examples in the form of statements. It also improves one’s capacity to identify mistakes and makes them visible during the exam since they are familiar with commonplace errors.

7. Phrase Replacement/Sentence Correction

For this topic, you are expected to look at some words or sentences, that are stated in a wrong way, and correct the whole phrase or sentence if necessary. It checks your ability in syntax, grammar, and special uses of language. Before the exam, you must practice the exercises that deal with incorrect phrases. Solving the previous year’s exam papers will make you familiar with the different types of errors that would be tested in the examination.
