The selection process of the SSC MTS exam consists of two stages: Paper-I and Paper-II. Paper-I is an online objective test that comprises four sections: General Intelligence and Reasoning, Numerical Aptitude, General English and General Awareness. Each section has 25 questions and carries 25 marks. The total duration of Paper-I is 90 minutes. There is negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer.
Paper-II is a descriptive test that is conducted offline. It is a pen-and-paper test that requires you to write a short essay or letter in English or any other language included in the 8th schedule of the Constitution. The topic of the essay or letter will be given on the spot. The total marks for Paper-II are 50 and the total duration is 30 minutes.
The candidates who qualify Paper-I will be shortlisted for Paper-II based on their performance and cut-off marks. The final merit list will be prepared based on the aggregate marks obtained in both papers. The candidates who make it to the merit list will be allotted posts according to their preferences and vacancies.

General Intelligence and Reasoning: This section tests your logical thinking, analytical ability and problem-solving skills. It includes topics such as analogies, similarities and differences, spatial visualization, spatial orientation, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, number series, coding and decoding, statement conclusion, syllogistic reasoning, etc.
Numerical Aptitude: This section tests your numerical ability, calculation speed and accuracy. It includes topics such as number systems, computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions, relationships between numbers, fundamental arithmetical operations, percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, time and distance, time and work, algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, etc.
General English: This section tests your knowledge of English language, grammar and vocabulary. It includes topics such as spotting errors, fill in the blanks, synonyms, antonyms, spelling/detecting misspelt words, idioms and phrases, one word substitution, improvement of sentences, active/passive voice, direct/indirect speech, cloze test, comprehension passage, etc.
General Awareness: This section tests your general knowledge and awareness of current affairs, history, geography, polity, economy, science, culture, sports, etc. It includes topics such as India and its neighboring countries, history of India and freedom struggle, physical, social and economic geography of India and the world, Indian polity and constitution, Indian economy and development issues, general science and technology, environment and ecology, general policy and scientific research, awards and honors, books and authors, important days and dates, sports and games, etc.

Short Essay/Letter in English or any other language: This section tests your writing skills, creativity and communication ability. You need to write a short essay or letter on a given topic in English or any other language included in the 8th schedule of the Constitution. The topic will be related to daily life, social issues, national interest, etc. You need to write in a clear, concise and coherent manner with proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. You need to express your views and opinions in a logical and convincing way. You need to avoid any irrelevant or offensive content.
