SSC JE 2023: What is Compressive Strength Test of Concrete – Cube Test?
Points to Remember
- This procedure is carried out to determine the compressive strength of concrete.
- If the aggregate’s size is above 20 mm, a 150 mm cube is used; otherwise, a 100 mm cube is used.
- The concrete is filled in layers of 50 mm and compacted with a 16 mm diameter; 60 cm high tamping rod subjected to 35 blows.
- The filled mold is kept in a vibration-free location at 27 ± 2°C and 90% humidity for 24 ± ½ hours.
- Afterward, the sample is immersed in water for adequate curing.
- At the specified testing age, the sample is removed from water and loaded at a rate of 14 N/mm²/min until failure.
- The concrete strength is determined by averaging three results, with a maximum deviation of ±5% between them.
- Loading the specimen induces complex stresses due to the restraining effect of steel plates, arising from differing lateral strains in steel and concrete.
- The lateral strain in steel is 0.4 times that in concrete, causing the test results to be higher.
