Topic-wise Preparation for SSC CGL Arithmetic, With Basic Concept

As we know arithmetic consists of many topics and if you want to score good marks in arithmetic then you should study and practice questions of each section individually. Below we have provided the basic concept and direct links to the SSC CGL arithmetic topic blogs.

SSC CGL Arithmetic Questions: Time and Work

Time is a concept that deals with the time taken by a person and a group of people to complete a work or a piece of work and the efficiency of an individual or a group.

Work is defined as a task that is to be completed by a person or a group to achieve a goal or result.

SSC CGL Arithmetic Questions: Speed, Time, and Distance

Time, Speed & Distance are the mathematical concepts that are used in calculating rates and distances. These concepts mainly cover the areas related to motion in a straight line, circular motion, clocks, boats and streams, etc.

Relationship Between Time, Speed & Distance (Formulas)

It is mandatory to know the relationship between Time, Speed & Distance.

  1. Distance=Speed X Time
  2. Speed=Distance/Time
  3. Time=Distance/Speed

SSC CGL Arithmetic Questions: Simple and Compound Interest

Interest: It is the amount to be paid on the borrowed money or the return earned on an investment.

Simple Interest

Simple Interest can be defined as it is the amount that is calculated on the principal amount or the initial sum of money.

Simple Interest Formula:

SI=(P x R x T)/100

  • SI – Simple Interest
  • P – Principal Amount (The amount borrowed or invested)
  • R – Rate of Interest (in %) (Rate of Interest at which the principal amount is invested or borrowed for a period of time)
  • T – Time period for which money is borrowed (no. of years)

Compound Interest

Compound Interest is a type of interest in which interest is earned on the principal amount and the accumulated interest from previous interest.

Compound Interest Formula:

Compound Interest= P(1+R/100)T-P where,

  • A = P (1 + R/100)t
  • A = Total amount to the paid
  • P = Principal Amount
  • R = Rate of Interest
  • t = Time period for which money is borrowed.

SSC CGL Arithmetic Questions: Profit and Loss

Profit: Profit can be defined as it is the amount that is gained by selling a product at a price greater than its purchased price.

Loss: Loss can be defined as it is the amount lost by selling a product for less than its purchased price.
Cost Price: It is the amount that is paid to purchase a product.
Selling Price: It is the amount for which the product is sold.

Important Formulas:

  • Profit or Gain= Selling Price – Cost Price
  • Loss = Cost Price – Selling Price
  • Profit percentage (P%) = (Profit /Cost Price) x 100
  • Loss percentage (L%) = (Loss / Cost price) x 100
  • Selling Price = {(100 + Profit%)/100} x Cost Price
  • Selling Price = {(100 – Loss%)/100} x Cost Price
  • Cost Price = {100/(100 + Profit%)} x Selling Price
  • Cost Price = {100/(100 – Loss%)} x Selling Price
  • Discount = Marked Price – Selling Price
  • Selling Price = Marked Price -Discount

SSC CGL Arithmetic Questions: Percentage

Percentage: It can be defined as it is a mathematical concept in which a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100.

Symbol for Percentage:- %

Some Important Formulas:

  1. Percentage=(Value/Total Value) x 100
  2. Percentage Increase = (Increase value – Original value / Average) × 100
  3. Percentage Decrease = (Original value – Decrease value / Average) × 100

SSC CGL Arithmetic Questions: Mixture and Alligation

  • Mixture: A mixture problem typically involves two or more quantities mixed together, and we want to determine the resulting concentration, quantity, or cost.
  • Example: Imagine mixing two types of rice, one costing $5 per kg and the other $10 per kg. The mixture’s cost depends on the ratio in which we mix them.
  • Alligation: Alligation is a specific rule used to solve mixture problems, especially useful when we mix two things with known quantities or costs to achieve a certain concentration or average cost.
  • Alligation Method: The method uses a cross formula to find the mixing ratio between two items.
