What is SEBI?
Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is the regulatory body for the securities and commodity markets in India under the ownership of the Ministry of Finance within the Government of India. Its main functions are to protect the interests of investors in securities, promote the development of the securities market, and regulate the securities market and related matters.
The Pattern of Examination for SEBI Grade A
The SEBI Grade A examination is conducted for the recruitment of officers in various streams of SEBI, such as General, Legal, Information Technology, Engineering, Research and Official Language. Candidates can apply for a maximum of two streams based on their educational qualifications.

Educational Qualification:
Minimum educational qualification depends on the stream they are applying for.
- For the General stream, the candidates should have a Master’s degree in any discipline or Bachelor’s degree in Law/Engineering, or CA/CFA/CS/Cost Accountant.
- For the Legal stream, the candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree in Law.
- For the Information Technology stream, the candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical/Electronics/Electronics and Communication/Information Technology/Computer Science) or a Master’s degree in Computer Application or Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a postgraduate qualification in Computers/Information Technology.
Age limit
The age limit for the post is 30 years as on a specified date. There is a relaxation of the age limit for candidates belonging to different categories, such as SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years), PwBD (10-15 years), Ex-Servicemen (5 years), etc.
Nationality
The candidate should be a citizen of India.
Syllabus for SEBI Grade A Examination
The SEBI Grade A selection procedure consists of three phases. The mode of examination is online.

Phase 1: MCQ/Objective

- Phase one consists of two papers of 100 marks each and different durations depending on the stream.
- Paper 1 entails General Awareness, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude and the Test of Reasoning for all streams.
- Paper 2 consists of subjects related to the specific stream applied for, such as Commerce, Accountancy, Management, Finance, Costing, Companies Act, Economics, Legal, Information Technology, Engineering, etc.
- There is a negative marking of 1/4th marks for each wrong answer.
Phase 2: MCQ + Descriptive
- It has two papers of 100 marks each. Exam duration depends on the stream.
- Paper 1 is a descriptive test of English writing skills, such as essay, précis and comprehension for all streams.
- Paper 2 is an objective test of subjects related to the specific stream applied for, such as the Financial Sector, Securities Market, Legal Aspects and Information Technology.
Phase 3: Interview
Only after clearing the Phase 2 examination are candidates called for the interview round.

- Paper 1: 30% sectional cut-off and 40% overall cut off
- Paper 2: 40% sectional cut-off and 50% overall cut off
Phase 2 online examination (Objective + Descriptive):
- Paper 1: 30% sectional cut-off and 50% overall cut off
- Paper 2: 40% sectional cut-off and 50% overall cut off
Phase 3 interview: 15% weightage in the final selection

Negative Marking
- In the first phase, there is a negative marking of 1/4th mark for each wrong answer.
- In the second phase, there is a negative marking for both objective and descriptive questions.
Salary Structure of SEBI Grade A Examination
The initial pay scale for SEBI Grade A Officer was revised to Rs. 44,500 from Rs. 28,150.
The salary at the time of joining is Rs. 19,900 per month. The candidates who are selected in the SEBI Grade A are paid a handsome salary, the salary structure for which ranges from Rs. 1,07,000 without accommodation and Rs. 73,000 with accommodation.
The increments and incentives will also add to the salary structure.
