Yes! Regardless of the marks obtained in SBI Clerk Prelims & Mains, if you’re unable to clear the local language test, you will be disqualified.
The purpose of this test is to ensure that candidates are fully aware of the different aspects of the local language in which they are going to deal with their customers.
The Test of Specified Opted Local Language is actually a written test (it may be an oral one as well). Sometimes, the candidates are given a passage & some questions and the candidates have to answer the questions (based on that passage) in the local language they have opted for. At times, candidates are also asked to translate a given passage in the local language so that their proficiency in the local language can be tested. Sometimes, tricky questions based on poems can also be asked.
Candidates may have to spot which sentence has correct spellings in 2 given sentences. They may also be asked how many vowels and alphabets are there in the opted local language. Moreover, antonyms, synonyms, fill in the blanks, spot the error, match the pairs, writing numbers etc. can also be asked on a given passage.
There can be a possibility that during the document verification process, the officials may have a conversation with the candidates in the local language to check the candidates’ fluency. Based on the fluency and the conversation, the officials will assign marks to the candidates.
