English Language (Writing Skills) carries a weightage of 100 marks and you get only 90 minutes to answer the questions. These questions are descriptive type and questions will be based on the below topics:

As you would have already noticed, the syllabus of ESI and FM is extremely vast thereby making their revision a comparatively difficult task. And therefore you need to put all your efforts towards scoring as many marks in this section. Let’s have a look at what the official Information Handout says about this section:

The paper on English shall be framed in a manner to assess the writing skills including expression and understanding of the topic. The Paper may include Questions on essay writing, précis writing and comprehension etc. Candidates will have to type answers with the help of the keyboard of the computer.

Essay Writing Tips

  • As soon as you read the topics, pick the one about which you know the most.
  • Start jotting down your facts, quotes, points, arguments etc.
  • Divide the above points into introduction, body and conclusion.
  • Introduction will have the starting point. You may start the essay with a quote or a fact to make a good first impression. You can also write on the history, definition or any other information on the topic.
  • Body will have the most essential information about the topic. You can put your strongest arguments here backed with examples.
  • Finally in the conclusion part, you can summarize your main points.
  • Ensure that you strictly stick to the word limit.
  • There shouldn’t be any grammatical error in the essay.

Précis Writing Tips

  • To score well in this topic, you need to be good at your writing skills.
  • You don’t necessarily need to include examples, illustrations etc. in the précis.
  • Don’t go by summarizing the sentences one by one. It’s supposed to be the summary of the complete passage.
  • You may break the passage into 2 parts for your convenience and then try summarizing it.
  • You can also make a note of all the important keywords & points and try to make a rough structure of the passage.
  • Strictly adhere to the word limit.
  • Finally, ensure that the summary reflects the idea of the original passage.
  • There shouldn’t be any grammatical error in the summary.

Comprehension Tips

  • This is something that you have already dealt with in the English section of the Phase I exam; just this time it is going to be descriptive in nature.
  • You will be provided with a passage and you will be asked questions based on it which you have to type.
  • Use your own words while answering the question. Don’t simply copy from the passage.
  • Try not to make any grammatical error while writing the answers.
  • Don’t write the answers based on your personal opinion. Use only the information provided in the passage.
  • After reading the question, if you don’t get the answer immediately, try reading the passage again with the question in your mind.
