A movie that came in 2009 didn’t only smash box office records but also shook the entire education industry. There was a sudden euphoria around how we need to pursue or visualise our education philosophy. The motto “Chase Excellence and Success Will Follow” became an overnight slogan for parents, educators, and students as well.
It questioned everything from teacher’s attitudes towards learning, types of students, parental expectations, student choices, societal influences, etc.
As the film revolved around the popular character Rancho played by Aamir Khan gave us all the key learnings. The life of banking or insurance exam aspirants is quite similar to that of engineers as they also have to go through the various entrance exams for different organizations. The only difference is one prepares for getting into a college and the others aim for a job.
That’s the thing about Rancho’s attitude. So many aspirants care too much about other details than just focusing on the syllabus at hand. Everyone has a knack for just beating around the bushes and then upset themselves with poor results. However, a Rancho would keep things as simple as possible. He will just follow as he is guided, have conceptual understanding, attends regular mocks, and take things one at a day rather than thinking about too much.
Just because you have understood or grasped something new today doesn’t mean you have a complete understanding of the same. Rancho always kept experimenting with his ideas and with his application of any concept. Similarly, you will have to solve hundreds of questions based on the same topic or concept. A question can be asked in various forms in the exam despite having the application of the same concept. Addressing multiple problems is the only way to be 100% ahead of any new twist or challenge you might face in the actual exam.
Rancho never compared himself with others or never behaved as an overconfident individual because of his excellence over his friends. However, most of us fall into this trap of comparison. If you didn’t crack the exam or are experiencing a hard time over preparation, you immediately get depressed by watching how others can do it successfully.
Most fears are nothing but a creation built by us which lives in the worst place ever. In our heads. As fear keeps on building, it consumes us entirely. All our decisions are now controlled by fear and not by our intelligence. Many people have the potential, but they succumb to all the unnecessary fears. All such individuals need to practice the “All Izz Well” mantra.
If you look closely at the interview scene of Raju, he narrates his negative thought patterns and how he landed up in a dreadful situation. You also need to look at things from a fresh perspective, just like Raju did in the end.
It is essential to get to know yourself and primarily your behaviour. How you react in different situations, what makes you at ease, what can make you stressed, etc. Knowing such details helps in recognizing your behavioural pattern. Good insight into one’s behavioural pattern or cognitive behaviour helps avoid the emotions that take control of life. You should be in the driver’s seat and not your emotions.
Most of us try to cover everything quickly and look for results in the short term. However, consistency and excellence guarantee actual results in the long term. The earlier you realise this, the better. Practicing with mock tests will help in shaping the learning curve along with the application methodology. Don’t let negativity influence your decision-making. It can be temporary, but most of it is just an illusion. Just don’t give up and have patience. Sticking at something for long will fetch you meaningful learnings, and quitting something early on will lead to regrets.
