Ages:

Problems on ages are usually based on concepts of ratio and proportions, percentages or averages.

Basics:

Let the present age of person ‘A’ be ‘x’ years

Let the present age of person ‘B’ be ‘y’ years

Then, age of ‘A’, 3 years ago from now = (x – 3) years

Age of ‘B’, 3 years ago from now = (y – 3) years

If it is said that, 3 years ago from now, the ratio of ages of ‘A’ and ‘B’ was p:q, respectively,

We have, (x – 3):(y – 3) = p:q

So, qx – 3q = pq – 3p

Average of ages:

If it is said that the average of present ages of ‘A’ and ‘B’ is ‘p’ years

Then, sum of present age of ‘A’ and ‘B’ = p × 2 = ‘2p’ years

Let the present age of ‘A’ be ‘x’ years

Then, present age of ‘B’ = (2p – x) years.

Question 1: Rahul is 8 years older than Manish while Manish is 6 years older than Sonu. If ratio of age of Sonu to age of Rahul is 5:12, respectively, then what will be the age of Manish after 12 years?

Solution 1: C)

Let, age of Sonu = ‘x’ years

Age of Manish = ‘x + 6’ years

Age of Rahul = ‘x + 14’ years

So, x/(x + 14) = 5/12

12x = 5x + 70

7x = 70, x = 10

Age of Manish after 12 years = x + 6 + 12 = 28 years

Hence, option c.

Solution 2: A)

Let the present ages of A and B are 4x years and 7x years respectively.

Age of B after six years = 7x + 6 years

Age of C after six years = (7x + 6) × 3/2 = ‘10.5x + 9’ years

Present age of C = 10.5x + 9 – 6 = ‘10.5x + 3’ years

According to question: 4x + 7x + 10.5x + 3 = 3 × 44

21.5x + 3 = 132

21.5x = 129, x = 6

So the present age of A = 4 × 6 = 24 years

Present age of C = 10.5 × 6 + 3 = 63 + 3 = 66 years

So the desired difference = 66 – 24 = 42 years

Solution 3: D)

Let, age of Rohit and Sohit be 6x years and 7x years, respectively.

So, age of Mohit = 7x + 5 years

According to question,

6x + 7x + (7x + 5) = 35 × 3

20x = 105 – 5

20x = 100, x = 5

Therefore, age of Sohit = 5 × 7 = 35 years

Hence, option d.

Solution 4: D)

Let the present ages of Tarun and Miraj are 4x years and 5x years respectively

Present age of Ashwani = 1.20 × 5x = 6x years

Sum of the present ages of Tarun, Miraj and Ashwani = 4x + 5x + 6x = 30 × 3

15x = 90, x = 6

So the present age of Ashwani = 6 × 6 = 36 years

Hence, option d.

Solution 5: B)

Let the present ages of Shivani and Shilpa be 7x years and 5x years, respectively.

Present age of Shipra = (5x – 5) × 1.20 = 6x – 6 years

So according to question: 7x + 5x + 6x – 6 = 3 × (5x + 2)

18x – 6 = 15x + 6

3x = 12, x = 4

So the present age of Shivani = 7 × 4 = 28 years

Solution 6: C)

Let the present ages of Shweta, Pooja and Neha are 4x years, 3x years and 7x years respectively

Present age of Reva = 1.40 × (3x – 4) = ‘4.2x – 5.6’ years

According to question: 4x + 3x + 7x + 4.2x – 5.6 = 35 × 4

18.2x = 140 + 5.6

18.2x = 145.6

x = 8

So the present age of Reva = 4.2 × 8 – 5.6 = 28 years

Hence, option c.

Solution 7: A)

Let, age of Himanshu be x years,

So, age of Sudit = (x + 8) years

So, age of Mudit = (x – 9) years

According to question,

(Sudit – 3): (Mudit + 4) = 5: 3

(x + 8 – 3): (x – 9 + 4) = 5: 3

(x + 5): (x – 5) = 5: 3

3x + 15 = 5x – 25

2x = 40

x = 20 years

Therefore, age of Mudit = 20 – 9 = 11 years

Solution 8: A)

Let the present ages of Manish and Ashwani are 5x years and 7x years respectively.

So according to question: 1.32 × (5x + 10) = 7x + 10

6.6x + 13.2 = 7x + 10

0.4x = 3.2, x = 8

So the present ages of Manish and Ashwani are 40 years and 56 years respectively.

Present average age of Manish and Ashwani = (40 + 56)/2 = 48 years

Hence, option a.

Solution 9: C)

Ratio of the present ages of Rajan, Vishal and Abhishek = 3 × 2: 8: 11 = 6: 8: 11

Let the present ages of Rajan, Vishal and Abhishek are 6x, 8x and 11x years respectively

So according to question: (6x + 3)/ (11x + 3) = 7/12

72x + 36 = 77x + 21

5x = 15, x = 3

So the present age of Vishal = 8 × 3 = 24 years

Solution 10: B)

Let, the present age of Veer be ‘3b’ years

Then, the present age of Dinesh = ‘b’ years

So, (3b + 16)/(b + 16) = 5/3

9b + 48 = 5b + 80

4b = 32

Therefore, the present age of Kartik = 19 + 8 = 27 years.
