Question 10: Ratio of the present ages of Dinesh and Santosh is 5:7, respectively. After 8 years, difference of their ages will become 12 years. Find the present age of Santosh.
A) 35 years
B) 42 years
C) 49 years
D) 28 years
E) 56 years
Solution 1: C)
Let the present ages of Mohit and Sohit are 3x years and 4x years, respectively.
So the present age of Rohit = 1.50 × 4x = 6x years
According to question: (3x + 1)/ (6x – 3) = 5/9
27x + 9 = 30x – 15
3x = 24, x = 8
So the present age of Sohit = 8 × 4 = 32 years
Hence, option c.
Solution 2: E)
Let present age of Ram and Shyam be P years and Q years respectively.
According to question,
(P – 4)/(Q – 4) = 13/15
15P – 60 = 13Q – 52
15P – 13Q = 8………………….(1)
And, (P + 4)/(Q + 4) = 15/17
17P + 68 = 15Q + 60
15Q – 17P = 8…………………..(2)
Solving equation (1) and (2), we get
P = 56 and Q = 64
Average present age of Ram and Shyam = (56 + 64)/2 = 120/2 = 60 years
Hence, option e.
Solution 3: D)
Let present age of father and son be F and S.
According to question,
F – 5 = 2 × (S – 5)
F – 5 = 2S – 10
F = 2S – 5…………………………….(1)
(F + 15)/(S + 15) = 8/5
5F + 75 = 8S + 120
5F = 8S + 45
5 × (2S – 5) = 8S + 45
10S – 25 = 8S + 45
2S = 70
S = 35 years
F = 70 – 5 = 65 years
Desired average = (65 + 35)/2 = 50 years
Hence, option d.
Solution 4: A)
Let present age of Avantika and Anamika be X years and Y years respectively.
According to question,
(X – 6) = (Y – 6) – 12
X = Y – 12…………………………….(1)
And, (X + 12)/(Y + 12) = 3/4
4X + 48 = 3Y + 36
Putting value of X from equation (1)
4 × (Y – 12) + 48 = 3Y + 36
4Y – 48 + 48 = 3Y + 36
Y = 36 years
X = 24 years
Desired Average = (36 + 24)/2 = 30 years
Hence, option a.
Solution 5: D)
Let present age of Garima and Yogesh be 5x years and 6x years respectively.
According to question,
[(5x + 6) + (6x + 6)]/2 = 28
11x + 12 = 56
11x = 44
x = 4
Desired ratio = (5x – 8):(6x – 8) = 12:16 = 3:4
Hence, option d.
Solution 6: A)
Let the present age of A and B be ‘x’ years and ‘y’years respectively.
(x – 6 + y – 6)/2 = 30
x + y – 12 = 60
x + y = 72 —–(i)
(x + 4)/(y + 4) = 9/11
11x + 44 = 9y + 36
11x – 9y = -8 —–(ii)
On solving (i) and (ii), we get
x = 32 and y = 40
So, B’s present age is 40 years.
Hence, option a.
Solution 7: A)
Let the present ages of Akash and Itij be 7x years and 5x years, respectively.
So, the present age of Gaurav = 7x – 3 years
Present age of Priya = 5x + 5 years
According to question: 7x + 5x + 7x – 3 + 5x + 5 = 4 × 24.5
24x + 2 = 98
24x = 96
x = 4
So, the present ages of Priya, Gaurav, Akash and Itij are 25 years, 25 years, 28 years and 20 years respectively.
So, the desired ratio = 25:25 = 1:1
Hence, option a.
Solution 8: D)
Age of Goli 4 years ago = 29 – 4 = 25 years
Present age of Bholi = 7/5 × 25 + 4 = 39 years
Required ratio = (29 + 6)/(39 + 6) = 35:45 = 7:9
Hence, option d.
Solution 9: B)
Let present age of Varsha and Rimjhim be V years and R years
According to question,
(V – 8) = (R – 8) + 10
V = R + 10………………………………(1)
(V + 12)/(R + 12) = 5/4
4V + 48 = 5R + 60
4V = 5R + 12
Putting value of V from equation (1)
4R + 40 = 5R + 12
R = 28 years.
V = 38 years
Desired ratio = (38 + 2):(28 + 2) = 40:30 = 4:3
Hence, option b.
Solution 10: B)
Let, ages of Dinesh and Santosh be ‘5x’ years and ‘7x’ years, respectively.
So, 7x – 5x = 12
2x = 12
x = 6
Present age of Santosh = 7 × 6 = 42 years
Hence, option b.
Age problems involve determining the ages of individuals based on given conditions and relationships.
Common types include finding present ages, calculating ages after a certain period, determining past ages, and comparing ages of different individuals.
Candidates Identify the variables representing the unknown ages, translate the given information into mathematical expressions, and form equations to solve for the variables.
