Linear seating arrangement questions for Prelims Exam

Directions: Answer the questions based on the information given below.

A certain number of persons are sitting in a row facing north direction. No seat is vacant.

Three persons sit between R and Q. P sits adjacent to R. Two persons sit between V and R. V and Q are not adjacent to each other. T sits third to the right of Q. One person sits between T and U, who is not adjacent to Q. Three persons sit to the right of U. The number of persons to the left of V is equal to the number of persons to the right of U. One person sits between V and S. At least 4 persons sit between S and P.

Common Solution:

Now, three persons sit between R and Q. P sits adjacent to R. Two persons sit between V and R. V and Q are not adjacent to each other. So, we have four cases,

Case 1(a):

V RP Q

Case 1(b):

V PR Q

Case 2(a):

Q PR V

Case 2(b):

Q RP V

Now, T sits third to the right of Q. One person sit between T and U, who is not adjacent to Q. So, case 2(a) is rejected. Three persons sit to the right of U. The number of persons to the left of V is equal to number of persons to the right of U. One person sits between V and S. At least 4 persons sit between S and P. So, case 1(b) and 2(b) are rejected. The final arrangement is shown below,

S V RP Q T U

Linear seating arrangement questions for Mains Exam

Directions: Answer the questions based on the information given below.

Eight cars, A through H are parked in a straight row in a parking lot. Each of them arrived at different time (in am), 8:15, 8:30, 9:00, 9:15, 10:15, 10:30, 11:15 and 11:45. All of them will be facing north.

A is parked 3rd to the left of the car which arrived 45mins after A. Two cars are parked between A and D. E, which is not parked adjacent to A, arrived one hour after D. Two cars are parked between E and H. F arrived after E, and is parked to the immediate right of D. Two cars are parked between F and C. Neither B nor G is parked at the left end. If a car is parked to the immediate left of D, then it must have arrived before 9. G arrived after B and D. Car which is parked at the right end arrived before at least one car but not immediately after E. Three cars are not parked between C and E. C is not parked at the right end. The car which arrived at 11:45 am is not parked to the immediate left of H. If B is parked at the right end, then the car parked to the immediate left of G didn’t arrive at 9:15 am.

Common Solution: A is parked 3rd to the left of the car which arrived 45mins after A. Two cars are parked between A and D.

Now car A can be to the left or right of D.

Case 1: If car A is to the left of car D. In this case, A arrived at 8:30 am and D arrived at 9:15 am. If a car is parked to the immediate left of D, then it must have arrived before 9. The car to the immediate left of D arrived at 8:15 am. F arrived after E, and is parked to the immediate right of D. Two cars are parked between F and C. C is not at the right end

AC DF

E, which is not parked adjacent to A, arrived one hour after D. Two cars are parked between E and H.

ACHDFE

But three cars are not parked between C and E. So, this case gets rejected.

Case 2: If car A is to the right of car D. If a car is parked to the immediate left of D, then it must have arrived before 9. F arrived after E, and is parked to the immediate right of D. Two cars are parked between F and C. As neither B nor G is parked at the left end,

EDFHACB/GG/B
DFHACEB/GG/B

But in table 1, E arrived after D.

Now, the possible cases of the timings are:

TimeCase 1 (a)Case 2Case 3 (a)Case 1 (b)Case 3 (b)
8:15A DA
8:30 A
9:00B B
9:15DBE D
10:15EDFDE
10:30FGAGA
11:15GEB/GEG
11:45 F FF

The car which arrived at 11:45 am is not parked to the immediate left of H. F didn’t arrive at 11:45 am. In case 3(a), If B is parked at the right end, then the car parked to the immediate left of G didn’t arrive at 9:15 am. So, G is at the right end. The car which is parked at the right end arrived before at least one car but not immediately after E. So, the final case is case 1 (a).
