Read this article till the very end to have all your answers today.

What happens immediately after joining RBI as a Grade B officer?

Soon after receiving your call letter, RBI will send you for the training at Reserve Bank Staff College which is located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. However, there might be a possibility of you directly being posted at any of the RBI offices across the country.

Most of the aspirants get posted at Mumbai initially.

Which department does RBI give to Grade B Officers?

The very first department you shall be given would be “The Issues and Banking Department.” Such a department will primarily focus on making you learn basic banking, know-hows, etc.

Which are different other locations apart from Mumbai for RBI postings?

RBI has four zonal offices located in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and New Delhi.

Then comes the regional offices which are situated in the following cities:

  • Delhi
  • Guwahati
  • Bhubaneshwar
  • Bhopal
  • Hyderabad
  • Ahmedabad
  • Chandigarh
  • Bengaluru
  • Jaipur
  • Patna
  • Nagpur
  • Lucknow
  • Thiruvananthapuram
  • Mumbai
  • Kochi
  • Kolkata
  • Jammu
  • Kanpur
  • Chennai

Then comes eleven sub-offices situated in the following cities:

  • Aizawl
  • Shillong
  • Dehradun
  • Gangtok
  • Agartala
  • Panaji
  • Imphal
  • Srinagar
  • Raipur
  • Shimla
  • Ranchi

What’s the employee transfer policy followed at RBI for Grade B Officers?

You can get transferred at the interval of every three years depending upon the requirements at different offices. However, it’s not a thumb rule to transfer every employee after a three-year period.

What’s the career progression or promotional opportunities at RBI?

These are the following promotional posts available for a Grade B officer:

  • Grade B Officer
  • Asst. General Manager
  • Deputy General Manager
  • General Manager
  • Chief General Manager
  • Principal Chief Manager
  • Executive Director
  • Deputy Governor

Most officers only end up at Chief General Manager. Only a few are able to crack Executive Director and Deputy Governor positions.

Not every single promotion would be on a seniority basis. You might have to keep acquiring additional and relevant qualifications. Interpersonal relations and your overall track record matters when it comes to top-level positions.

What’s the expected salary of a Grade B Officer?

As per the revised pay revision, the annual package is now up to 30 lakhs per annum.

Are Economics and Finance necessary for Grade B selection? Will there be biases against me in the interview session?

The eligibility criteria guidelines don’t say so.  All RBI is looking for potential candidates who are able to screen out really well by following the exam pattern. Post that you are trained thoroughly both at RSBC and during the initial months. So, it would be a waste of opportunity to take such a factor into consideration.

The bias of the interviewer won’t be there for the simple reason because somebody being from a finance background doesn’t give them the guarantee that they will stick to the job. RBI spends money on the training of the Grade B officers and it would look bad on them if people didn’t join them post-training.

How is the work-life balance of an RBI Grade B officer?

The initial period or position isn’t that stressful. You are in the learning period and are asked to follow the instructions. You are most likely to be managed by Assistant or General Managers. It’s a five-day week job which isn’t the case with most of the banks or govt. Based organizations.

I had gap years post my graduation or Master’s. Will it affect my selection?

No, absolutely not. The age limit is very well defined from 21-30 with many relaxations.

How do I excel in my preparation growth and be well suited for this job?

It’s better to get your hands on RBI Grade B mocks as soon as possible. The syllabus is too broad and has numerous sub-topics which can be overwhelming, especially for people who aren’t from any financial or economic background. It gives you the initial push for the preparation. It’s better to start early for RBI Grade B because seats are way too limited. Each day is essential and can act as a stepping stone for cracking the job of a lifetime.

Conclusion

The quality of life at RBI is highly rewarding looking at the career path you will follow. It will get easy with time. Yes, there will be days you will feel you are a lot behind than others but that’s okay. You will be taken care of.
