Is SBI PO a good job?: The SBI PO official is a bank probationary officer. It is an entry-level job that a bank provides to people if they clear a particular bank examination. For example – If someone wishes to work in SBI they will fill out the forms for the SBI PO examination. Similarly, there are other exams as well conducted by different banking bodies. A bank PO goes under two years of a probationary period and is finally offered the position of assistant manager.   • The initial two years are highly focused on learning multi-disciplines. You will be asked to be involved with accounting, marketing, finance, investment, and any other relevant department for your wholesome learning.  
  • A bank PO also looks after clerical workings performed by the clerks. A maker and checker relationship gets formed between clerks and PO’s. If a cash transaction is being made by a clerk, then it’s the PO’s job to verify it. 
  • As a PO you also issue ATM cards, demand drafts, cheques, etc.  
  • A bank PO should be highly aware of all the new guidelines, rules, schemes, new product launches of the bank. Reading all the circulars, official mails, is a key component of doing well at a banking job.  
  • You can also be assigned work such as visiting sites of the clients who ask for loans, collection of mortgage documents, verification, etc. 
  • Post the probationary period you are expected to now handle work solely such as issuing of cheques, draft issuance, cash management, etc.  
  • With time you will be given the work of increasing the business of the bank by opening new bank accounts, selling loans, securities, mortgages, etc.  
  • It is very important for PO-level employees to handle customer grievances, complaints, demands, and needs of the customers. By doing so one gets to learn about real-life and some of the most practical banking issues you can face at a job. You might also be given a public relations officer department to look after such issues.  
  • As you progress with time and managers can see what your potential is; you will be offered much more serious work and responsibilities. Such high-level work can include budgeting, planning, marketing, investment management, loan processing/approval, etc.

Future Career Prospects for a Bank PO  

In India, a bank official who joins as a PO is most likely to have better future prospects if compared with clerical jobs or with even other government jobs. If you keep working hard with consistency you can also reach some of the top management level positions in the financial sector.  

Even the basic salary you start with is good enough if we look at the per capita income of India. A youngster who is just starting out and comes from a normal middle-class family might see it as an opportunity of a lifetime.
