English Language, as you might know very well, is an essential part of many Bank Exams and may decide your selection or rejection. The descriptive paper is a part of the English section of the mains phase of Bank exams. The mains exam comprises both objective and descriptive tests. Therefore, the marks you will score in both these tests will be included in deciding the final merit for your recruitment.
The Descriptive English part of all the Bank Exams tests a candidate’s English skills is divided into two sections:
Let’s then talk about how you can go about writing a perfect Essay within a given time and word limit!
An essay is a short piece of writing on any given topic, which can be divided into three parts:
A good Essay should always be error-free and properly structured with a flow of ideas.
There are certain simple rules that can help you in writing an essay as quickly and efficiently as possible, without killing the quality. You need to brainstorm ideas around the given topic and collect them as you generate them. Outline and include a summary of about one to two sentences of what you are going to discuss in each section of the essay.
You need to treat each paragraph as a mini-essay and ensure all paragraphs are well-connected. Always back your arguments or opinions with facts. Proofread the essay for grammatical errors. Check the grammar, spelling, and punctuation by reading the essay backward so you can check each word and sentence.
Let us take a look at the three major parts of an Essay!
Before starting your essay, you should invest a few minutes in planning the essay. Don’t just start typing with proper planning. Spend one-third of the total time allotted to the essay in planning your essay, 8 minutes writing it, and use the remaining 2 minutes to revise/edit your essay.
Begin your essay by introducing your topic and write briefly about its background. Your introduction should set out the aim of what you are going to write and refer to the topic to be explored. It is better to state briefly what the essay will try to achieve and mention some of the main points you will consider. Your overview should be logical and coherent.
The main body of the Essay generally is made up of several paragraphs. The number of paragraphs depends on your word count and the complexity of your argument. An Essay should be your opinion but with a clear description of what you know about the topic with facts and data. Most of the Bank Exams ask to pen an essay with a word limit of 400 words. Therefore, the body of your essay should not exceed two or three paragraphs. Try your best to stay within the word limit and don’t get carried away with the flow while writing the body. Try to include facts, statistical data, etc. to make it more appealing. Write your strongest argument first, followed by the second strongest, and third strongest, and so on. Each paragraph should contain one of your main ideas or arguments, followed by sentences supporting the ideas.
Make it clear from the arguments of your main body what your conclusion is going to be. It should be a summary of what you have written. It is used to summarize and restate your main argument or arguments with the strongest evidence supporting it. Avoid introducing a new idea or new surprises in the conclusion and avoid using the same words that you used in the body.
Don’t forget that the knowledge or information of a subject matter or topic is only part of the preparation process. You need to train your mind to spend quickly thinking about how to organize your ideas. You can achieve nothing in this world without hard work and dedication. And that is what is needed in sharpening your writing skills in penning a quality Essay on any topic in any Bank Exam. To come out with good essays every time, you need to take care of your reading habits. Read newspapers daily without fail. Newspapers will inject in your mind all the necessary general knowledge, grammar and vocabulary, and the idea-generating power.
In addition, you need to constantly work on avoiding any grammatical errors in your writing. After writing every essay, you should proofread it for errors in grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
