How to Prepare for SSC CHSL Tier I? Will the exam be difficult?

SSC CHSL 2019 Tier I was conducted on March 16, 17 & 18 2020, but because of COVID-19, the remaining sessions were postponed until further notice. Some aspirants took the exam but those aspirants’ whose exam dates were later than March 18, 2020, their exam got postponed. First, the notification from Staff Selection Commission stated that SSC CHSL 2019 Tier I exam will be conducted on August 17 – 21, 2020 & August 24 – 27, 2020. But then a further notification from SSC confirmed that October 12 – 16, October 19 – 21 and October 26, 2020. This is good news for SSC CHSL aspirants whose exam is still pending as amongst numerous other exams, only this exam’s date has been revealed.

In this article, we will be covering the complete preparation/revision strategy for SSC CHSL 2019 Tier I. This exam starts on October 12, 2020, which leaves you with 76 days of preparation. A number of aspirants may think that there are so many days left and they tend to ignore the preparation in the early days. But remember, SSC CHSL Tier I is an speed-based exam and only if you start your preparation now, you will be able to get that speed (along with accuracy) which you need to clear the exam. Remember that early bird catches the worm. 

Know SSC CHSL 2019 Tier I Exam Pattern

The very first step towards SSC CHSL 2019 Tier I exam preparation is knowing all the details of the exam pattern. Any confusion in this can create serious problems for you. For your convenience, we are providing SSC CHSL 2019 Tier I Exam Pattern here. Tier I is conducted online and contains 100 Mutliple Choice Questions the maximum marks for which is 200. The total time allowed for this test is 60 minutes. There will be a total of 4 sections in this exam: English Language (Basic Knowledge), General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic Skill) & General Awareness.

Note:

  • ** Total time duration for all parts is 60 minutes (80 Minutes for candidates eligible for scribes).
  • ** In Tier I examination questions will be set both in English and Hindi for Part II, III & IV. Multiple Choice and Objective type questions only.
  • ** There is a negative marking of 0.50 mark per incorrectly answered question however there is no penalty for unanswered questions.

Be Thorough with SSC CHSL Tier I Syllabus

If you want to clear this exam, you need to be updated with its syllabus. For aspirants’ convenience, SSC has provided the indicative syllabus in the SSC CHSL 2019 notification itself. Have a look at the syllabus of different sections:

English Language (Basic Knowledge)

Spot the Error, Fill in the Blanks, Synonyms/Homonyms, Antonyms, Spellings/ Detecting mis-spelt words, Idioms & Phrases, One word substitution, Improvement of Sentences, Active/ Passive Voice of Verbs, Conversion into Direct/Indirect narration, Shuffling of Sentence parts, Shuffling of Sentences in a passage, Cloze Passage, Comprehension Passage.

General Intelligence

Semantic Analogy, Symbolic operations, Symbolic/ Number Analogy, Trends, Figural Analogy, Space Orientation, Semantic Classification, Venn Diagrams, Symbolic/ Number Classification, Drawing inferences, Figural Classification, Punched hole/ patternfolding & unfolding, Semantic Series, Figural Pattern-folding and completion, Number Series, Embedded figures, Figural Series, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Emotional Intelligence, Word Building, Social Intelligence, Coding and de-coding, Other subtopics, if any Numerical operations

Note: Questions will be of verbal & non-verbal types.

Quantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic Skill)

Number Systems: Computation of Whole Number, Decimal and Fractions, Relationship between numbers.

Fundamental arithmetical operations: Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Square roots, Averages, Interest (Simple and Compound), Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Allegation, Time and distance, Time and work.

Algebra: Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra and Elementary surds (simple problems) and Graphs of Linear Equations.

Geometry: Familiarity with elementary geometric figures and facts: Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents,

angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles.

Mensuration: Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Sphere, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square Base.

Trigonometry: Trigonometry, Trigonometric ratios, Complementary angles, Height and distances (simple problems only) Standard Identities like sin^2𝜃 + Cos^2𝜃=1 etc.,

Statistical Charts: Use of Tables and Graphs: Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar-diagram, Pie-chart.

General Awareness

Questions are designed to test the candidate‟s general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions are also designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of an educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighboring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General policy and scientific research.

SSC CHSL 2019 Tier I- Previous Year Cut-offs

When you are serious about preparation, knowing the cut-offs of the previous year is equally important. Cut-offs help you understand how much do you need to score in different sections. In fact, you can pick that year’s question paper and solve it within the time limits to see if you are able to achieve the same cut-off or not. Make a Time Table

This is an extremely important step for your preparation. You need to devote 4-5 hours on a daily basis to SSC CHSL Tier I preparation. Create specific time-slots on a weekly basis and stick to them while studying. You can be flexible in your time table but ensure that whatever you have aimed for, really gets completed.

Cover all the Sections

If you want to have a good overall score, you need to prepare all the 4 sections. Studying different topics of the same section can cause boredom. So, study on a rotational basis. This will also ensure that all sections are covered evenly.

Revise General Awareness Section regularly

General Awareness section in SSC CHSL Tier I is memory-based and you need to memorize a lot of study material from different topics like History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General policy etc. It goes without saying that the syllabus of General Awareness section is extremely vast. Only memorizing the study material will not help. You need to revise the study material on a regular basis. We suggest that you allot different days of the week to different topics so that no topic gets missed out.

Keep Assessing Yourself

Mock Tests are the best tools to assess yourself on a continuous basis. Not just assessment, it also helps you with extra questions of General Awareness which you might have missed in your preparation. Also, take out time to analyze your performance and focus on those questions which you didn’t answer correctly. Check the detailed explanation so that the same mistake isn’t repeated in the actual exam. Also, make a note of questions which you couldn’t answer and try to understand the conceptual gap.

Will SSC CHSL 2019 Tier I Exam be Difficult?

Now comes the Important Question: Will the exam of SSC CHSL 2019 Tier I which is going to be conducted on October 12 – 16, October 19 – 21 and October 26, 2020, be difficult. A number of aspirants have already taken the exam in the month of March 2020. The aspirants who were not able to take the exam and their exam is pending, they definitely get some advantage as they several months extra time to prepare for this exam.
