Direction Sense For IBPS RRB Clerk and PO 2025 Exam: The Direction-Sense Test is an Important Topic of the reasoning section in the IBPS RRB PO and Clerk exams. Direction-sense questions check your ability to trace the path of an object or person based on given instructions involving directions (North, South, East, West, and their combinations) and distances. These questions may also include turns (left, right), angles, or relative positions (e.g., “to the left of”). In this article, we are providing effective strategies, tips, and techniques to prepare for the Direction-Sense questions in the IBPS RRB PO/Clerk 2025 exams along with the practice questions.

What is Direction Sense

Direction sense is the ability to understand where you are about other places, how to get from one point to another and be aware of your surroundings and orientation in space. It’s about knowing the directions (like north, south, east, and west), and understanding how to move from one place to another based on those directions.

Cardinal Directions (Primary Directions):

These are the four main directions:

  • North (N): The direction that points toward the North Pole.
  • South (S): The direction that points toward the South Pole.
  • East (E): The direction where the sun rises, or to the right when facing north.
  • West (W): The direction where the sun sets, or to the left when facing north.

These directions help us know where we are and where to go.

2. Intermediate Directions (Secondary Directions):

These are the directions between the cardinal points:

  • Northeast (NE): Between north and east.
  • Southeast (SE): Between south and east.
  • Southwest (SW): Between south and west.
  • Northwest (NW): Between north and west.

Knowing both cardinal and intermediate directions allows us to be more precise in describing locations or movements.

3. Left and Right:

When you face a certain direction, the left and right are based on your point of view:

  • If you face north, left is west and right is east.
  • If you face south, left is east and right is west.

4. Up and Down:

  • Up refers to a direction toward the sky or higher ground.
  • Down refers to a direction toward the earth or lower ground.

Basic Concepts to Master

  • Cardinal & Intercardinal Directions:
    • N, S, E, W, and NE, NW, SE, SW.
  • Left/Right Turn Rule:
    • Always consider the person’s current direction when turning.
  • Clockwise & Anticlockwise Movement:
    • Use a compass or a circular diagram for visualization.
  • Pythagoras Theorem:
    • Displacement = (x2+y2)\sqrt{(x^2 + y^2)}(x2+y2)

Important Points to Note while Solving Direction Sense Questions

  • The angle between two cardinal directions is 90 degrees and that of any two nearest directions will be 45 degrees (for eg. the angle between North and North-East).
  • The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. So at sunrise, a shadow would be falling towards the west and at sunset, it would be falling towards the east.
  • If a person faces north at the time of sunrise, his shadow will be towards his left and if he faces north at the time of sunset, his shadow will be towards his right.
  • If a person faces south at the time of sunrise, his shadow will be towards his right and if he faces south at the time of sunset, his shadow will be towards his left.
  • If a person moves right, he moves 90 degrees in the clockwise direction and if the person moves left, he moves 90 degrees in the anticlockwise direction as per this chart.
  • If it’s not specific, you need not assume that if a person is moving south-east, he will be definitely moving with 45 degrees. Keep a range in your mind.

Tips to Solve Direction Sense Questions

  • Learn the Basics: Familiarize yourself with the eight cardinal directions: North, South, East, West, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest. Understand their relative positions on a compass.
  • Master Distance Calculations: Many questions require calculating the shortest distance between two points, often using the Pythagorean theorem. Pythagoras Theorem can be applied in the case of a right-angle triangle.
  • Right turn directions will be clockwise and left turn directions will be anti-clockwise.
  • Use Diagrams Effectively: Always draw a diagram for complex questions to visualize the path. Practice a lot of questions to gain mastery of this topic.
  • Practice Regularly: Solve Previous Year Papers and analyze IBPS RRB PO/Clerk question papers from 2020-2024 to understand the difficulty level and question trends.
