The post of an income tax officer has its own charm. It must feel immensely proud to see the designation ‘Income Tax Officer’ by your name. It is one of those government jobs which receives respect as much as some other government jobs such as IAS, IPS, Defence forces, etc.  

How to become an Income Tax Officer? 

Everybody has to take Staff Selection Commission – Combined Graduate Level (SSC – CGL) exams in order to qualify for the income tax officer’s job. The exam contains 4 tier series of examinations. Tier I – Prelims, Tier II – Mains, Tier III – Descriptive Paper in English or Hindi (Writing of Essay/ Precis/Letter/ Application,) Tier IV – CPT (Computer Proficiency Test) 

Eligibility Criteria for becoming an Income Tax Officer 

One of the very first criteria is to meet the physical requirements of the job.

Physical Standard  Height – 157.5cm 
Chest – 81 cm 
Height – 152cm 
Weight – < 48kg 
Walking 1.6 km in 15 minutes 1 km in 20 minutes 
Cycling 8 km in 30 minutes 3 km in 25 minutes 

Age Guidelines – Candidate should be above the age of 18 and not above the age of 27 years. He/she should meet the age criteria as of the 1st of July of the examination year. For OBC and SC/ST applicants, the age requirements have special exceptions. A maximum of 27 years (3-13 years of relaxation for reserved categories). The age restriction has also been introduced to benefit existing government officials or for army personnel.
