Expected English Language Topics in SSC CHSL 2022

SSC CHSL 2022 Tier I will be starting from May 25 onwards. Check the complete schedule here: SSC CHSL 2022 Tier I- Shift Timings & Schedule. Many SSC aspirants face difficulties in 1 section which is English Language (Basic Knowledge). However, please be informed that if you prepare, practise & revise this section properly you can clear it with good marks. Talking about the details of this section- there will be 25 questions of maximum 50 marks in this section. In this article, we will be listing out the expected topics in the English Language section which are sure to appear in SSC CHSL 2022 Tier I exam. If you prepare for these topics, you can definitely clear the cut-off of this section and at the same time give a boost to your overall score.

Most Expected English Language Topics

Para jumbles

  • These questions have been frequently asked in previous SSC CHSL exams.
  • In these questions, a sentence will be split into multiple parts and you need to find the right, logical sequence.
  • Reading the fragments carefully and understanding the inherent theme will do the trick.
  • You must also try to establish the link of one part with another.
  • If you want to excel in this topic, solve at least 10-15 questions on a daily basis.

Error Detection

  • You will be asked to check if the given sentence has any errors or not.
  • If a sentence is divided into different parts, so pause while reading the sentence. Read it in one go.
  • Remember: this topic is error detection and not error correction. So you just need to find the error and mark the relevant option as your answer. You don’t have to put your time & energy to correct it.
  • Revise all the basic grammar rules. These rules can help you pinpoint the error better.
  • Do a lot of practice as well. Solve at least 10-15 questions of error detection on a daily basis.
  • Check spelling mistakes as well while looking for errors.
  • Subject-verb agreement is a common mistake found in these questions.
  • Another common error found is using a similar word instead of the actual word. For example, using ‘their’ in the place of ‘there’.
  • Check conjunctions like as … as, so … that as well.

One-word Substitution

  • A group of words will be given in these kinds of sentences and you need to mark the work which means the same as that of the group of words.
  • Your vocabulary has to be constantly updated & revised if you want to answer these questions.
  • Practise at least 10-15 questions on a daily basis and keep revising them on a frequent basis.
  • These questions are easy to answer if you know the meaning. It doesn’t require any thought-process unlike topics like error detection, para jumbles etc.

Idioms and Phrases

  • There is no escaping from the fact that only retaining the meanings of idioms & phrases will help you. In other words, you will have to keep revising the meanings of idioms & phrases on a daily basis.
  • It’s often seen that questions are repeated. So revising questions which were asked in previous years can help you as well.
  • Practise at least 15-20 questions on a daily basis.
  • The good part is that if you know the meaning, you can instantly answer it.

Synonyms & Antonyms

  • Here also, vocabulary plays an important role. Your good reading habits can do wonders.
  • Keep revising the list of synonyms-antonyms on a frequent basis.
  • These questions are easy to answer provided you know the meaning. Avoid guessing as there is a negative marking as well.

Active Passive

  • Here you will be given a sentence and you will be asked to choose the active or passive voice of it.
  • Knowing the grammatical rules of active-passive conversion will help you to a great extent.
  • If you have practised well enough, you can get the answer almost instantaneously.

Direct Indirect

  • Knowing the rules of direct-indirect speech conversion will do the trick.
  • If you want to answer the direct-indirect questions quickly, do a lot of practice beforehand.

Cloze Test Passage

  • Cloze test is nothing but fill in the blanks extended to a complete passage.
  • You will be given a paragraph where there will be a number of blanks. You need to fill the blank with the most suitable option.
  • Go through the complete passage once to get a rough idea and the theme of the passage.
  • Now, start reading the passage; don’t look at the options yet.
  • Think about the word which can fill the blank; now look at the options. If that word is there, it’s most likely the right answer.
