This section examines your awareness about Indian economic and social development. Economic & Social Issues (ESI) is a kind of subject that holds both static concepts and current affairs. Therefore, you have to balance your preparation for both. Though there are a few things that you need to keep in mind, like focusing more on current events related to economy, poverty, social justice, and government schemes; understanding static topics like GDP, inflation, demographics, rural development, etc.; and reading newspapers and referring to authentic sources like RBI reports and PIB will help a lot.

Economic & Social Issues (ESI) for NABARD Grade A
The questions here test how well you’re aware of the country’s economic condition, government policies, social reforms, and rural development issues. Since NABARD is a development-focused organization, it’s natural that they choose candidates who are not only academically capable but also socially and economically aware. It’s understandable that ESI might seem vast at first, but once you start breaking it into subtopics like poverty, inequality, employment, rural development, education, and government schemes, everything becomes more clear. The deeper you dive into it, the more interesting the subject becomes.
In the Prelims paper, ESI has a dedicated 40-mark section. You can expect a mix of factual and conceptual questions, mostly current affairs-based. You should aim to attempt 30–35 questions with high accuracy.
In the Mains section the level goes up a notch. Questions are more analytical and detailed. You’ll need to write structured answers that reflect understanding and awareness. You cannot negotiate with the writing practice.
