Direct Indirect Speech SSC CGL

Direct Speech is when we report the exact words spoken by someone.
Direct Speech: He said, “I am going to the market.”

Indirect Speech is also known as reported speech; it is when we report the meaning of what someone said, without quoting their exact words.
Indirect or Reported Speech: He said that he was going to the market.

Key changes in reported speech:

  1. Pronouns change based on the speaker and listener:
    • “I” becomes “she” or “he”
  2. Verb tenses often shift back:
    • Present → Past
      “I like coffee”She said she liked coffee
  3. Time expressions sometimes change:
    • “today” → “that day”
    • “tomorrow” → “the next day” or “the following day”

1. Tense Change Rules (When Reporting Verb is in Past)

Direct SpeechIndirect Speech
Present Simple → Past Simple“I eat apples.” → He said that he ate apples.
Present Continuous → Past Continuous“I am eating.” → He said that he was eating.
Present Perfect → Past Perfect“I have eaten.” → He said that he had eaten.
Past Simple → Past Perfect“I saw him.” → He said that he had seen him.
Will → Would“I will go.” → He said that he would go.
Can → Could“I can swim.” → He said that he could swim.
May → Might“I may come.” → He said that he might come.

2. Pronoun Changes

Pronouns in the reported speech change according to the subject and object of the reporting verb.

He said, “I am happy.”He said that he was happy.
She said, “You are late.”She said that I/he/she was late.

3. Time & Place Word Changes

Direct SpeechIndirect Speech
Today → That day“I will go today.” → He said he would go that day.
Tomorrow → The next day / following day“I will go tomorrow.” → He said he would go the next day.
Yesterday → The previous day“I went yesterday.” → He said he had gone the previous day.
Now → Then“I am working now.” → He said he was working then.
Here → There“I am here.” → He said he was there.
This → That / These → Those“This book is good.” → He said that book was good.

(a) She said that she might come late.
