Eligibility Criteria

The SSC CGL typing test is only applicable for candidates who have applied for the posts of Tax Assistant (Central Excise and Income Tax) and Assistant Section Officer of CSS. The typing test is conducted after the Tier-II exam and before the document verification. The candidates who qualify the Tier-II cut-off for these posts are eligible to appear for the typing test.

Typing Speed and Accuracy Requirements

SSC CGL typing test is a skill test that assesses the candidate’s ability to type in English or Hindi on a computer. The minimum typing speed required for English is 35 words per minute (wpm) and for Hindi is 30 wpm. The typing speed is calculated based on the correct words typed in 10 minutes. The candidates have to type at least 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes. The key depressions include alphabets, numbers, symbols and space bar. The candidates have to maintain an accuracy of at least 80% in their typing. The accuracy is calculated based on the errors made in spelling, punctuation, grammar and formatting.

Typing Software and Mode

The SSC CGL typing test is conducted on a computer using a software provided by the commission. The software has a built-in timer that starts and stops automatically. The candidates have to type in Microsoft Word with font size 12 and font type Times New Roman. The candidates can choose either English or Hindi as their medium of typing. However, they cannot switch between the languages once they start typing. The candidates are not allowed to use any external keyboard, mouse or any other device. They are also not allowed to use any editing tools such as backspace, delete, cut, copy, paste, undo, redo, etc.

Syllabus

The SSC CGL typing test does not have any fixed syllabus or topics. The candidates have to type a passage given on the screen. The passage can be from any subject such as general awareness, current affairs, science, history, geography, etc. The passage can also include numerical data, tables, charts, graphs, etc. The candidates have to type the passage exactly as it is given without making any changes or additions.

Tips to Improve Typing Skills

The SSC CGL typing test is not very difficult if you practice regularly and improve your typing speed and accuracy. Here are some tips that can help you prepare for the typing test:

  • Practice typing on a computer using the same software and settings as the SSC CGL typing test.
  • Practice typing different types of passages from various sources such as newspapers, magazines, books, websites, etc.
  • Practice typing with proper finger placement and posture. Use all your fingers and avoid looking at the keyboard while typing.
  • Practice typing without using any editing tools such as backspace, delete, cut, copy, paste, undo, redo, etc.
  • Practice typing with a timer and monitor your speed and accuracy. Try to increase your speed gradually without compromising on your accuracy.
  • Practice typing in both English and Hindi if you are not sure about your medium of choice.
  • Practice typing daily for at least 30 minutes and take breaks in between to avoid fatigue and strain.
