Questions on blood relations are frequently asked in IBPS PO examination. These questions give you some data about two or more persons and ask you questions based on those relationships. With the changing types of questions in banking exams, this concept can be tested in a single question or can appear in a puzzle. If it’s a standalone question or a set of two questions, you must give it a try. If there is a puzzle involving blood-relations, you need to size it up quickly by having a glance at the number of attributes and the info provided. Let’s have a look at some of the tips to solve questions based on blood-relations.

Don’t presume

As is applicable in any reasoning question, don’t presume anything be it gender or how many offsprings a cousin has.

Start the question with yourself

One way to solve the question is to apply the question to yourself. When you do this, the question starts revolving around your relatives and becomes easy to solve. However, if you intend to use this method, do a lot of practice beforehand because there may be a scenario when the relative in the question doesn’t’ exist in your life and you may have to assume him/her.

Diagram method

Another approach to solving this question can be drawing diagrams. When drawing a diagram, use different lines and symbols to depict different relations, genders etc. Again, you have to do enough practice beforehand to use this method fluently.

Lines and symbols to be used

It all depends on your preferences on which line and symbol should you use to connote different relationships. We are providing the below legends which can help you to get an idea.

  • ⊕ for a male individual
  • ⊖ for a female individual
  • ↔ between a couple
  • – – – for same generation such as brother – – – sister or father – – – uncle
  • ____ for generations where – – – can’t be used

Break the question

If the question has long sentences, break it into small parts so that it becomes easy to comprehend.

Know all the relations

While relations in Hindi are very specific, that isn’t the case with the English language. Learn and understand all the relationships. Be specific about the two relationships: brother-in-law and sister-in-law. If you’re a male, your brother-in-law would either be your sister’s husband or your wife’s brother. Similarly, your sister-in-law would either be your wife’s sister or your brother’s wife.

Example 2

If B is married to Q, then how is B related to M?

(a) Grandson

(b) Son-in-law

(c) Son

(d) Daughter-in-law

(e) Can’t be determined

Solution

Prima facie, the sexes of B and Q seems to be unknown leaving us to two options (b) and (d). But the moment you read the last statement of the question “M does not have married daughter.” you get to know that Q can’t be female since s/he is married. So Q is the husband and B is the wife who is the daughter-in-law of M.

Hence option (d) is correct.

New types of questions

The new types of questions which different banking exams come up with are most likely a conundrum for aspirants. Questions based on coded blood relationship can appear and likewise, age-based questions can be asked. Apply normal reasoning when answering to these questions. Only when you practice a lot and solve a lot of new kinds of questions in your practice sessions, you’ll most likely be undeterred in your actual exam. Mock tests are the perfect platform to encounter new kinds of questions. Let’s see an example below:

Directions: Answer the following question based on the information given below:

The 4 tables given below show the relationships between 8 people- A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H, who all belongs to a family of 3 generations. There are only three married couples in the family. Only married couples have children. No married couples have daughters. All female members except the female in the first generation have one sister. One married couple is present in the third generation of the family.

There is exactly one married couple in each of the three generations of the family. A son or daughter of the family does not have more than one sibling. All couples have at most one child. There are same number of members in the 1st and 2nd generations.  There are at most three family members in the 3rd generation.

In the tables given below

() represents a direct relationship between the two members of the family.

( – – – – – ) represents there is no direct relation between the two members of the family.

If there is no arrow connecting between any two members of the family, it does not mean they don’t have any direct relation.

Direct relation represents one relationship among – Father, Mother, Wife, Son, Daughter, Brother or Sister, among the two members.

No direct relation:

F doesn’t have a direct relation with C, B or H.

H doesn’t have a direct relation with D, C or F.

G doesn’t have a direct relation with A or B.

Now,

There are only three married couples in the family. One married couple is present in the third generation of the family. Only married couples have children, so, one married couple is present in each generation. All female members except the female in the first generation have one sister, so, married females in 2nd and 3rd generation have only one sister. No married couples have daughters.

E has four direction relations, so, E is present in 2nd generation and is a male member. A and D have three direct relation, so, A and D are E’s wife and son but not necessarily in the same order. If A is E’s son, then D is E’s wife. D is directly related to G, so, G will be sister of D. G has two direct relation, so, this is not possible. A will be E’s wife and D will be E’s son. D is directly related to G, so, G will be wife of D. H is directly related to G, so, H is sister of G. F is directly related to A, so, F is sister of A. Now, B and C are married couple and are in 1st generation. So, the family tree is as follows:
