Who wouldn’t like a career with a speedy growth in a thriving industry with opportunities waiting? That’s exactly what the banking industry offers and no wonder lakhs of aspirants strive hard to make a mark for jobs which are only thousands in number. The growth is really fast in this sector when compared with other government sectors. With new branches opening on a regular basis, the banking industry is permeating into unexplored horizons and this promises a number of vibrant opportunities to the aspirants.

Working as a Banker for one of the largest PSBs (Public Sector Banks)

When a career in the banking industry has so much to offer, getting such a job would be difficult. Yes! You guessed it right. Canara Bank, has a network of 6,639 branches throughout the country and offices in London, Hong Kong, Moscow, Shanghai, Doha, Bahrain, South Africa, Dubai, Tanzania, and New York. The bank conducts its recruitment process once in a year. It is interesting to note that Canara Bank recruits candidates in two-fold ways. One via IBPS recruitment and the other one via its in-house recruitment. The major difference between both types of recruitment is, with the former you get recruited instantly whereas with the latter you get to undergo a PGDBF (Post Graduate Diploma in Banking and Finance) course with a duration of 9 months. We’ll be focussing on the recruitment via the PGDBF course in this article.

Recruitment Details

PGDBF Course Details

This year the recruitment (via PGDBF course) was notified on Oct 23, 2018. The PGDBF program comprises of 9 months of classroom studies and 3 months of internship at the branches/offices of the bank. The PGDBF course will be conducted either at Manipal Global Education Services Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru campus or NITTE Education International Pvt Ltd. Greater Noida campus. It’s a fully residential program on the successful completion of which, candidates will be awarded a PGDBF from the respective institute and will be offered appointment in Canara Bank as Probationary Officer in Junior Management Grade Scale-I.

Entry to the PGDBF Course

Aspirants can apply online through the bank’s portal for this course. The entry to this course is through a selection process consisting of an online objective test followed by Group Discussion and Personal Interview. There are reservations for SC, ST, OBC and PWBD aspirants. The age limit is between 20 and 30 years for which there is a relaxation of 5 & 3 years for SC/ST & OBC respectively. An aspirant needs to have pursued graduation with a minimum of 60% for which there is again an exemption of 5 percentage points for SC/ST/PWBD aspirants.

Computer Literacy & Hindi Language

The selected candidates must have an operating & working knowledge of computer systems. In case, they don’t have this skill, they must acquire it within 6 months of joining. On the same lines, a selected candidate must have a working knowledge of Hindi. In case, a candidate doesn’t have the working knowledge of Hindi, s/he should acquire it before his probation period.

Course Fee

The course fee of both of the institutes are below:

  1. Manipal Global Education, Services Pvt. Ltd, Bengaluru campus: Rs 4,13,000 (including taxes)
  2. NITTE Education, International Pvt. Ltd, Greater Noida campus: Rs 3,54,000 (including taxes)

Candidates have the option to pay it in one lump sum or in two installments (50% before the course commences and remaining 50% after two months of course-commencement but before the end of the third month). Candidates also have the option of availing educational loan from the bank subject to their eligibility. This fee will be reimbursed as a loyalty bonus if you serve the bank for 10 years.

Security Bond

A security bond needs to be signed by the selected aspirants at the time of their joining which states that an aspirant needs to serve the bank for a minimum of 5 years. In case an aspirant abandons/absconds/resigns before this period, s/he be liable to compensate the bank with an amount of Rs 1,00,000 (+ taxes) along with the repayment of the educational loan (if any).

Salary & Emoluments

The scale on which selected candidates would be joining is JMGS-I and the pay scale will be ₹ 23700 – 980/7 – 30560 – 1145/2 – 32850 – 1310/7 – 42020. Additionally, there will be dearness allowance, HRA, CCA, medical aid, leave fare concession etc. and perquisites like Conveyance, Furniture etc. A number of these factors will depend on the place of posting.

Application Fee & Application Procedure

The application fee is Rs 708 for general candidates and Rs 118 for SC/ST/PWBD which can be paid only through online. Applicants are advised to read the content of the advertisement and check their eligibility and apply online on the bank’s website.

Selection Procedure

The selection procedure will comprise an objective test, group discussion & interview.

Points to Note

  • Wrong answers will attract a negative marking of 0.25 mark.
  • Cut-offs of different sections and total cut-off will be decided by the bank. It will mainly depend on the number of vacancies and the performance of candidates.
  • Candidates who rank sufficiently high in the order of merit will be called by the bank for GD & PI in 1:3 ratio.
  • Total marks for GD & PI are 50 each and the minimum qualifying marks are 40% for general candidates and 35% for SC/ST/OBC/PWBD students.
